Netflix's upcoming original historical drama, The King, is based on William Shakespeare's Henriad plays. The Henriad plays were only adapted once in history. This is four times if you count the Netflix adaptation. BBC’s, The Holly Crown, was arguably the biggest production, as it covered the entire tetralogy, but with the addition of The King, visually, this could be the best adaptation yet. The Original has been directed by David Michôd, his second Netflix Original after War Machine.

Hal, the rebellious prince and reluctant heir of the English throne, has abandoned royal life in favor of living with the people. When his dictatorial father passes away, Hal becomes King Henry V. He is now forced to accept the life that he tried to avoid. The young king now has to navigate palace politics, war, chaos, and his father's legacy, as well as the emotional strings from his past, including the relationship with John Falstaff, his mentor and closest friend.

When will The King appear on Netflix?

American daylight savings time doesn’t come into effect until Sunday, 3rd November. For a week, some areas will be able to receive their latest titles an hour sooner than normal.

Based on reviews from thirty-three critics and Metacritic, The King received a score of 62/100. Critics have been divided amongst each other with some hailing the film as an “epic period piece”, while others have found it incredibly boring.

Sixty-four of the 90 Rotten Tomatoes critics gave The King an updated rating.

For a film that hasn’t been released to wider audiences. it’s surprising that IMDb has over 800 user ratings for The King. Current score is 7.0/10

The Rotten Tomatoes user ratings are a more modest 85%. However, there is only 39 reviews. On occasion, some IMDb members have categorically bombed films before they’ve even watched them, so never take its rating as gospel.
